The number of Burnet Lady Dawgs attending voluntary workouts says plenty about the program
To say coaches of the Burnet High School Lady Dawgs are encouraged by the number of athletes attending voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions is an understatement.
The average number of high school athletes attending daily is 40, while 21 middle school students are coming.
Soccer head coach Kim Myhre credits a couple of reasons for attendance.
“The success we had this year,” she said, noting that volleyball, basketball and soccer all advanced to Class 4A Region III tournaments. “They’re showing up and working hard.”
The other, and this might be the most important, is who is there.
“The leaders are coming, and they’re bringing the freshmen,” Myhre said. “They saw the success at the high school. The freshman group has showed up. It’s awesome to see.”
The Lady Dawgs embrace the standard of wearing the Kelly green, the coach added, and because each athlete competes for more than herself, she is willing to prepare weeks before the school year begins.
“I think they just want it,” she said. “We need that as a whole. Kids want to compete for them. They don’t want to let them down. When your best athletes are also your best leaders, they lead by example. They know how to talk to them, they want to work hard for them. That became the expectation. It’s become a trickle effect because they don’t want to let each other down.”
Myhre noted the Lady Dawgs may have some top athletes not attending. But that’s because they are playing on select or travel teams.
“They’re doing the work it needs to keep the success,” she said.
The coach commended the athletes for understanding an important element of success that sometimes gets lost — championships are won in the offseason when fans aren’t watching.
“It truly is the most successful year overall they’ve had of all time,” she said of the 2021-22 school year. “That trickles down to the younger kids. It’s great to see them put us on the map.”
